Position: Teaching and Creative Counsellors

Magical Mayhem Summer Camp with the Vancouver Unitarians Centre engages children ages 7-12 in creatively addressing social justice issues through the avenue of role play, theatre, ritual, nature magic, and fun. Lovingly reffered to as "Live Action Role Play, Social Justice Theatre Camp." Our guiding value is Radical Inclusivity with love at the centre. Position Title: Teaching Counsellor
Reports to: Camp Director
Rate of pay: $25.30-$28/hour
Dates: July 21-25, 2025 (Planning as available in June/early July; set-up the weekend before, clean-up/debrief Saturday following)

DESCRIPTION

Teaching Counsellors are involved with camp schedule planning beginning in late May or June. They prepare one or more workshops to run twice in a day with small group segments. Workshops should be tied to the theme and related to either crafting, ritual/mindfulness, garden/nature, art, storytelling, theatre, or improv. All staff create a character for themselves prior to camp and maintain an immersive magical world experience throughout the hours of camp.

Teaching Counsellors act as mentors and a resource for the youth leadership development volunteers who act as leaders for the small groups (guild leaders).

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Solid Experience with either young children and/or youth in a leadership or teaching capacity
  • Ability to create and lead age appropriate activities and workshops
  • Social or environmental justice activism experience, justice work with youth or children a plus.
  • A passion for play and a desire to spark creativity and agency for change in young people.
  • Experience with leadership of junior counsellors or high school youth volunteers.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience preferred.
  • First Aid certification.

Position Title: Creative Counsellors
Reports to: Camp Director
Rate of Pay: $23-$25.15/hour
Dates: July 21-25, 2025 (training/set-up July 19/20, clean-up/debrief Friday night or Saturday July 26)

DESCRIPTION

Creative Counsellors assist the Teaching Counsellors in leading classes and workshops. They work closely with the Leadership Development Volunteers (high school youth) to ensure the safety and engagement of the campers during workshops and free time. They may be assigned as leader of one Guild (small group) if there is not a youth available. Creative Counsellors may take a lead with various crafting or other creative projects throughout the week. They help hold the storyline and a safe, enjoyable space for kids to connect, play, and thrive.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with either young children and/or youth in a leadership or teaching capacity
  • A passion for play and a desire to spark creativity and agency for change in young people.
  • Experience with leadership of high school youth volunteers helpful.
  • Comfort leading or overseeing art and craft activities with children
  • Social or environmental justice activism experience, justice work helpful.
  • Minimum High School diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • First Aid certification.
