• Hours of Work: 40 hours per week
• Work Location: Based out of Aurora, Ontario with a hybrid work schedule, however role will require >50% time working outdoors leading field work from April - October

Ontario Streams is looking for an energetic, enthusiastic, and reliable individual to contribute to our mission of restoring and protecting aquatic habitats within the Greater Toronto Area. We lead restoration projects in a variety of habitats including rivers and wetlands to improve ecosystems for sensitive species such as Redside Dace, Atlantic Salmon, Brook Trout, and Jefferson Salamanders.

Summary of Position

The Project Biologist will lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of regional stream and wetland rehabilitation projects.This role is responsible for training seasonal staff in various habitat restoration skills and leading the seasonal staff in the implementation of these projects in the field from April to October. Working alongside the full-time team, the Project Biologist will contribute to funding applications, data management, biological monitoring, project reporting, and volunteer stewardship programs.

Summary of Major Tasks:

• Oversees regional rehabilitation projects through project development, implementation, and monitoring
• From April to October, prioritizes and supervises daily tasks for seasonal Habitat Technicians in the field, ensuring safe working conditions and adherence to project plans. Daily tasks include planting trees, managing invasive species, collecting litter, and in-stream habitat rehabilitation activities.
• Liaises with government partners and landowners to acquire all required permits and permissions for project sites. Maintains strong communications with partners throughout the project lifecycle.
• Leads administrative activities (including data management) with a focus on accuracy.
• Collaborates with the full-time team in the research, development, writing, and submission of funding proposals and project reports.
• Follows Ontario Streams’ health and safety practices, and identifies and reports safety hazards and deficiencies, implementing risk management protocols as required, and;
• Other duties as assigned. We are a small, but mighty, team supporting each other on diverse tasks is a common occurrence.

Eligibility Requirements

• University degree in biology, ecology, or a related field
• 1+ years of experience developing and implementing wetland and stream rehabilitation projects
• 1+ years of experience leading and supervising teams
• Established project management skills including time management, permitting, budgeting, developing work plans
• Demonstrated knowledge of environmental issues
• Excellent oral and written communication skills with colleagues, external partners, and the public.
• Excellent organization and computer skills (Microsoft Office and Google Workplace)
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
• Physical work is required in this position. A successful applicant must be physically fit and able to complete field work
• Ability to work outdoors in adverse environmental conditions over extended periods of time
• A Valid G Class Drivers License with clean driving record is required

Additional qualifications that would be considered an asset:

• Experience operating trucks and towing small trailers
• Standard first aid and CPR certification
• Backpack Crew Leader Electrofishing Training, Ontario Stream Assessment Protocol, and/or Ontario Benthos Biomonitoring Network certifications
• Experience using GIS software

Terms of Employment

• April 1, 2025 - March 31, 2026 (possible rollover into permanent position pending performance after successful completion of the contract)
• Salary: $24.00 - 27.00/hour, 40 hr/week
