Position: Communications and Outreach Coordinator
Organization: Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society, Northern Alberta
Location: The successful candidate must be located in the Edmonton region for in-person outreach events, but some work can be conducted from home.
Eligibility: ages 15-30 (see below)

CPAWS Northern Alberta is seeking an enthusiastic, environmentally focused person to fill the role of Communications and Outreach Coordinator.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Communications and Outreach Coordinator will perform the following duties in support of building awareness of conservation issues and opportunities in Northern Alberta:

• Work with the CPAWS Northern Alberta team to plan and execute community outreach and communications activities related to CPAWS Northern Alberta's conservation programs.
• Coordinate and lead online or in-person outreach and education activities related to conservation in northern Alberta
• Assist the Communications Manager in developing engaging online content and social media posts that educate the public about biodiversity loss, nature-based climate solutions, protected areas, and cumulative impacts on public lands
• Collaborate with subject-expert staff members on outreach event planning, campaign development and communications content
• Lead volunteer engagement, training and coordination

Duties will be prioritized depending on workload and may change as you work with the Executive Director, Program Director, and Communications Manager to determine CPAWS Northern Alberta’s outreach priorities.

Qualifications:

• Meet eligibility criteria for wage subsidy funding programs (see below)
• Post-secondary education in biology, environmental sciences, communications, or a related field, preferably with knowledge of conservation issues in Northern Alberta
• Experience in creating social media content for social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Twitter/X, bluesky, or Linkedin)
• Familiarity with social media planning tools such Meta Business Suite and Hootsuite
• Familiarity with Adobe suite: Acrobat, InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop
• Keen interest in social media trends and marketing
• Experience with campaigning or coordinating events
• Excellent communicator, presenter, and writer
• Comfortable with public speaking and enjoys interacting with the public
• Must be capable of responding quickly and flexibly to changing events and assignments
• Strong interpersonal skills including an ability and passion for developing and fostering enduring relationships with communities, governments, and the non-profit sector
• Enthusiastic, collaborative attitude, and strong interest in working with technical staff to break down and present complex topics in approachable and engaging ways for the general public
• Previous experience working in, or collaborating with, Indigenous communities in Northern Alberta is an asset
• Availability to travel and work evenings and weekends, as required
• Must be located in the Edmonton region for in-person outreach events
• Must have access to transportation to and from outreach events with outreach equipment

Additional Information:

• This position is dependent upon confirmation of funding.
• The position will initially be for March to September, 35 hours/week, at a rate of $25/hour. If additional funding is confirmed, the position may be extended.
• The opportunity closes at 9 am (MST) on Mon. Feb 10, 2025.
• Ideal start date will be early March 2025.

Wage subsidy program eligibility requirements:

• Between the ages of 15 and 30 (inclusive) at the start of the intervention;
• Canadian Citizens, Permanent Residents, or Protected Persons as defined by the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act;
• Legally entitled to work in Canada;
• Legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations
• Not currently working for the hiring organization;
• Not in receipt of Employment Insurance (EI) during the internship;
• Not currently enrolled in school

Eligibility requirements for some funding programs include:

• A graduate of degree or diploma programs from universities, colleges, post-secondary schools of technology, post-secondary institutes and CEGEP (collège d’enseignement général et professionnel, Québec);

• Self-identifies as Indigenous, youth living with a disability, Woman, Racialized youth and youth who are living in a Northern or Remote community
