We are hiring Dockside and At-Sea Monitors!

Ecotrust Canada is hiring Dockside and At-Sea Monitors for commercial fishery monitoring based in Prince Rupert on the traditional territory of the Ts’msyen (Tsimshian) people. Our new monitors will be hired as part-time staff available from May to September, several days a week. The actual length of fisheries is determined through the season, and a set number of workdays is not guaranteed. This is an on-call position.

Salary Range: $20-25/hour.

Our Community Fisheries program has been deeply rooted in community and solution-building in coastal BC for over 20 years. Our vision is for resilient fisheries that meet the immediate social and economic needs of adjacent communities without compromising ecological integrity or the ability of future generations to meet their needs.

Responsibilities include:

  • Designated Observers will be responsible for the efficient and accurate collection of data in Ecotrust Canada’s At-Sea Observer Program (ASOP) and Dockside Monitoring Program (DMP), which operates under the direction of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO)
  • Observers are responsible for documenting all fishing activity, collecting biological samples, monitoring compliance with fishery regulations, and preparing summary reports of collected data
  • Legibly and accurately record data on multiple forms
  • Always maintain a professional working relationship with the client

Qualifications:

  • Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment
  • Organizational skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent teamwork skills
  • Comfortable working on docks, fishing vessels, and handling fish
  • Completion of a Criminal Record Check
  • Have no serious convictions under the Criminal Code or any DFO act or legislation
  • Have no serious convictions under the Criminal Code or any DFO act or legislation
  • Does NOT hold a fisher’s registration card or certificate of accreditation
  • Not involved in any commercial fishing enterprises
  • Does NOT purchase fish to resell
  • Is NOT an owner, operator, or employee of a business that catches, cultures, processes, or transports fish
  • Must be a Canadian citizen or have Permanent Residence status
  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Work well under pressure in a fast-paced environment
  • Good task management, excellent communication skills, meticulous attention to detail
  • Be able to meet the physical requirements of the job including, but not limited to, climbing ladders, boarding fishing vessels, and working long hours in all weather conditions
  • Previous experience with offloading, fish identification, commercial fishing industry experience, and an interest in fisheries is an asset
  • Successfully complete a basic offshore survival techniques training course (ASOP)
  • Successfully complete Ecotrust Canada’s DFO-approved ASOP and DMP training program
  • Has a vehicle or their own transportation

Potential Observers are required to successfully complete Ecotrust Canada’s observer training program. The program teaches Observers about the fishery to be monitored, safety protocols, relevant laws, and monitoring procedures.

A mandatory training course is scheduled in May. Successful applicants must attend and pass the training course. A training stipend is provided during the course.
