Title: Urban Forestry Technician
Municipality: Town of East Gwillimbury 
Location: Sharon / East Gwillimbury, York Region / GTA, Ontario

Reporting to the Parks Supervisor, the Urban Forestry Technician (UFT) leads the administration and review of permit applications submitted under the Town’s Private Tree Protection By-law. The UFT is responsible for the overall management of the tree canopy which includes annual assessment of tree health and degree of insect infestation, maintaining tree inventory, and processing work orders for block pruning, assessment, tree removal and planting.

The Urban Forestry Technician will:

  • Respond to inquiries, conduct site visits and help educate and advise the public on tree preservation matters.
  • Work collaboratively with By-law Officers regarding by-law contraventions and enforcement matters.
  • Attending court proceedings as a subject matter expert as required.
  • Review, analyze, and provide recommendations regarding tree protection, preservation, compensation and compliance with applicable standards, guidelines, policies and by-laws.
  • Conduct site inspections to advise on tree by-law inquiries and application submissions, approve compensation planting plans and monitor tree permit compliance.
  • Develops and coordinates the implementation of compensation planting plans on Town property.
  • Monitor external contractor’s work to ensure contractual compliance.
  • Responsible for all internal arboricultural related duties managing all aspects of the Town’s urban forest including tree planting, maintenance and removals.
  • Responds to, tracks and updates resident Services Requests and associated work orders.
  • Maintain an accurate and up-to-date tree inventory GIS database.
  • Represents the Town at Forestry related internal and external Working Group Meetings.
  • Provides expertise on invasive species related to trees and urban forest health.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a municipal setting, in a similar role.
  • Degree in Arboriculture, Forestry, Environmental Studies or related discipline.
  • International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) certified Arborist.
  • Tree Risk Assessment Qualified (TRAQ).
  • Computer literacy utilizing the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook, SharePoint, Teams) as well as Geographic Information System Software and Work Order Systems.
  • Ability to interpret and understand technical drawings.
  • Working knowledge of arboriculture, tree preservation and compensation.
  • Must be able to work a 40-hour work week. Hours include Monday- Friday 7:00am- 3:30pm. Flexibility for occasional evening work as required.

Salary Range: $81,370- $95,728 (Band 5)
