Position Title: Conservation Crew Lead (ON)
Organization: Freshwater Conservation Canada
Location: Guelph, Ontario

  • Hours: 40 hrs/week;
  • Dates: March 31st to November 28th with possibility of extension
  • Salary Range: $20/hr

Freshwater Conservation Canada (formerly Trout Unlimited Canada) is a science-based, national, charitable conservation organization. We were founded in 1972 in response to challenges to freshwater fisheries through a focus on volunteer-driven, science-based resource conservation and hands-on activities.

Our mission is “to conserve, protect and restore Canada's freshwater ecosystems and their coldwater resources for current and future generations”. Our programs have a watershed focus and are implemented directly by staff and through engagement of our local chapters, volunteers, and partners. Our programs and projects focus on assessment, monitoring and restoration work on freshwater systems, improving water quality and quantity, healthy habitats and healthy freshwater communities.

Job Description:

Freshwater Conservation Canada is looking for an enthusiastic individual with a background in forest or aquatic ecology to lead our field crew in implementing riparian and aquatic restoration projects. Under the guidance of the Project Coordinator, the Crew Lead will develop and execute daily workplans to advance project objectives including but not limited to invasive species ID and removal; site preparation; tree planting, post-planting maintenance; fisheries sampling; in-stream rehabilitation, and related activities.

This role will include some overnight stays, some under camping conditions, and may include one or two week-long stays. Accommodation costs will be covered and a daily per diem provided.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and supervise crew members and volunteers on project sites, ensuring adherence to safety protocols and project timelines.
  • Operate motorized vehicles and equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Operate equipment, tools, and vehicles while adhering to safety protocols and best practices
  • Support with equipment maintenance as needed including preventative maintenance to ensure optimal functionality (e.g. Truck, ATV, chainsaw, chipper, brush saw, spray equipment).
  • Oversee staff schedules and track daily timesheets.
  • Foster relationships with partner organizations.
  • Data collection, analysis, and report preparation.

Qualifications:

  • Experience or knowledge of applied forest and/or aquatic ecology
  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in forestry, biology, environmental science, or natural resource management is preferred.
  • Superior interpersonal communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Leadership qualities
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills, attention to detail, and accuracy.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite,
  • Dependable, flexible, and resourceful with excellent teamwork skills.
  • Full Driver’s License, with good driving record.
  • Standard First Aid and CPR certification required.

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

Candidates possessing these qualifications will be given a higher ranking.

  • Experience working with non-profit organizations
  • Chainsaw Operator’s Training & Certification.
  • Forestry Exterminator’s License
  • ATV driving experience or certification
  • Electrofishing certification
