Position: Engagement & Programs Coordinator
Type: age 30 & under / summer
Organization: The Pigeon Lake Watershed Association
Location: Pigeon Lake, 1.5 hours southwest of downtown Edmonton. County of Wetaskiwin. (Hybrid: 3 days in office at the Village at Pigeon Lake, and up to 2 days working from home.

Anticipated Start Date: May 6, 2025
Last Day of Summer Position: August 16, 2025
Hourly Wage: $17.00
Work Week: Tuesday to Saturday

Job Summary:
As part of our summer stewardship team, the Engagement & Programs Coordinator will be responsible for engaging the community with the Pigeon Lake Watershed Management Plan (PLWMP). This is a summer term position. The Engagement & Programs Coordinator will be key in helping members of the community to "Be Part of the Solution" by delivering programs and sharing relevant environmental and educational information.

The tasks and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Recruit, train, and coordinate volunteers for community events such as garden clean ups, planting events, Love the Lake Fun Day, and more .
  • Collaborate with partner groups including the Pigeon Lake Watershed Management Plan Steering Committee, local municipal councils, and members of local Indigenous communities.
  • Facilitate events as a part of the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup (GCSC). This includes finding cleanup captains, providing necessary information and equipment, and uploading collection data to the GCSC site.
  • Promote clean runoff and conduct residential property assessments to help land owners implement beneficial land use management practices including shoreline naturalization.
  • Create digital content relating to Clean Runoff, Lake Appreciation Month, other relevant or interesting topics, etc. for the PLWA social media, website, and newsletters.
  • Share presentations on behalf of PLWA at Annual Meetings in the Summer Villages.
  • Collaborate with the rest of the PLWA summer stewardship team to plan, and deliver, programs to children at summer camps and other community events.
  • Collaborate with the rest of the PLWA summer stewardship team to plan and host our annual Love the Lake Fun Day.

Other tasks may be assigned at the discretion of the General Manager.

Work Location:
The Pigeon Lake Watershed Association office is in the Village at Pigeon Lake. This position has the option to work from home up to 2 days per week if there are no tasks or events that need to be in-person. Some activities will require day travel to other locations around the Lake and watershed.

Education/Certification/Experience:
This role does not have a specific educational requirement. Some post-secondary education in a relevant field such as Environmental Studies would be considered an asset.

Required Skills:

  • Some knowledge of water, lake, and aquatic ecosystems and the local environment
  • Good interpersonal skills with a strong ability to build connections with people
  • Proficiency with Google Suite
  • Good verbal communication and active listening skills
  • Ability to work independently and from home - self-motivated, good time management and goal setting skills
  • Positive attitude and flexible to changes
  • Organized and capable of multi-tasking with several competing demands;
  • Functions effectively in a team setting and independently
  • Ability to learn quickly

Additional Assets:

  • Experience with social media management
  • Graphic design experience
  • Event coordination experience
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR

Other Requirements:

  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license
  • A reliable vehicle (you will be responsible for all insurance and maintenance of the vehicle, PLWA will pay mileage for work related travel)
  • Able to work flexible hours including weekends, holidays and an occasional evening (typical work week is Tuesday to Saturday, 8:30 to 4:30)
  • Willing to provide a Police and Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Use of a personal Laptop is requested
  • Youth eligible for the Canada Summer Jobs Program. Must:
    a. Be between the ages of 15 and 30 at the start of the employment,
    b. Be A Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment; and,
    c. Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

The PLWA will provide you with:

  • Cloud-based file folder for all PLWA files. File storage to be governed, with written agreement, by the PLWA information and privacy policy
  • Workers Compensation Board coverage
  • Supervision and mentoring, training, and coaching from staff and subject matter experts
  • Health and safety workplace training and PPE for all standard operating procedures. All relevant public health measures will be followed and documented.
