Position: Office Assistant
Type: age 30 & under / summer

Location: Delta BC (Close enough to be able to attend meetings or special events.)

The Peatlands Protection Society is a new organization founded in 2021, to raise awareness about our disappearing peatlands and the need to protect them to reduce climate change. Currently, we have signed an MOU with Kwantlen Polytechnic University to work towards creating a world-class research/education centre, The Environmental Law Centre at UVIC created a policy paper on limiting or banning the use of peat for horticultural and gardening use. A national organization has collaborated with the Peatlands Protection Society to create and pass motions to protect Canada's peatlands.

Office Assistant

The successful candidate qualifies under the Government of Canada summer funding and be the ages of 16 to 30 at the time of employment. They will have excellent computer skills, good writing skills and able to use a program that fixes errors. The person needs to be creative and willing to try new things. They will need access to a car in order to attend community events.

The successful candidate is able to work alone, in collaboration with at least one other person. The focus is on creating information material relating to peatlands, its wildlife, its role in indigenous culture ain reducing climate change. The successful candidate is prepared to gain knowledge about peatlands.

Some planned activities include creating educational material for K to Grade 3, Grade 4 to 7 as well as teaching material. Some of the material may include creating books for children with stories about peatlands and their fascinating creatures. Last year's employee created the "Gardener's Guide to Saving the Planet." It is getting rave reviews.

The final products will depend on the skills and experience of the successful candidate. There may be material produced for "in-house" use such as a guide to Trade/Community Events. The successful candidate must be willing to attend community events on weekends when most of them happen.

There may be work on the Society's website once it is up and running.

This position is subject to government funding. At present it is proposed for 16 weeks at 35 hr/week.

Wages: BC minimum wage plus $2.00/hr plus MERCs and mileage if needed.
