VOLUNTEER POSITION

Role: Head of Communications
Organization: Community Climate Council
Location: remote in Peel Region/GTA, Ontario

About The Community Climate Council

We are a passionate and dedicated team of volunteers who are unable to sit idle as we live through the climate crisis and strive to catalyze climate action at the local level through climate literacy and political advocacy.

About this role

Are you a passionate communicator committed to climate action? The Community Climate Council is seeking a Head of Communications to lead our efforts in raising awareness, engaging the community, and driving meaningful change against climate change. You'll develop and implement communication strategies, manage media relations, and create compelling content across digital and print media. Your role is crucial in amplifying our message, fostering partnerships, and ensuring effective communication of our initiatives. If you have a proven track record in strategic communications, exceptional skills, and a passion for sustainability, join us in making a tangible impact.

Time Commitment: 5-10 hours/week

Duties

  • Lead the Communications team and report to the CEO.
  • Develop comprehensive communication strategies.
  • Utilize experience in climate communication to enhance messaging (experience in climate communication is an asset).
  • Oversee all social media handles and the website to ensure content is created authentically and creatively, adhering to the council’s brand.
  • Maintain and enhance the council’s branding kit.
  • Strive to grow the council’s audience by working closely with campaign leads to publicize projects.
  • Lead weekly meetings with the communications team to assess current work, discuss media strategies, and design projects.
  • Create and manage the social media content calendar each month in collaboration with the communications team

Qualities

The ideal candidate is a true leader who is dedicated, self-motivated, timely and reliable. They have:

  • Strong design skills and an eye for detail;
  • Experience with social media and web design, and a solid understanding of design principles;
  • Proficiency in design tools like the Adobe Suite, Squarespace, and Wix is essential;
  • Strong verbal and visual communication skills;
  • An understanding of marketing and advertising, the ability to anticipate social media trends;
  • Strong organizational and managerial skills are crucial;
  • Must be adept at fact-checking and citing credible information;
  • Experience in managing and prioritizing multiple projects;
  • Ideally have experience in science communication and managing a team of 3+ members;
  • Knowledge of local climate issues and climate action is a plus.

Qualifications

  • Experience working in a nonprofit and managing a team Is preferred
  • Excellent communication, organizational, analytical, and problemsolving skills.
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Stong supervisory and leadership skills.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and delegate them when appropriate.
  • Experience developing strategic plan is an asset
  • Ability to use Google Drive.
