About Pelee Island Bird Observatory

The Pelee Island Bird Observatory (PIBO) is dedicated to the study, conservation, and education of migratory bird populations in the Pelee Island region. Since its founding in 2005, PIBO has been at the forefront of bird research and public education on migratory patterns, conservation issues, and the ecological significance of Pelee Island as a migratory hotspot.

In 2025, PIBO will celebrate its 20th anniversary. As part of this milestone, we are producing a short film that highlights the observatory's work, the importance of bird conservation, and the inspiring people who have contributed to its mission over the years. This film will be a key part of our outreach and fundraising efforts and will be showcased at our anniversary events and on various digital platforms.

Position Overview

PIBO is seeking a skilled and creative Videographer to work on a short film for the observatory’s 20th anniversary. The videographer will be responsible for capturing high-quality footage that tells the story of PIBO’s impact, its research, the unique biodiversity of Pelee Island, and the community’s role in the organization’s success. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a project that celebrates nature conservation and environmental stewardship.

Key Responsibilities

  • Pre-production:
    • Collaborate with PIBO staff and the project manager to develop a creative concept and visual style for the short film.
    • Assist in scripting, storyboarding, and planning the film’s structure, including identifying key moments and subjects to feature (e.g., research, bird banding, community events, interviews with stakeholders, etc.).
    • Scout filming locations on Pelee Island, ensuring accessibility and best lighting conditions.
  • Production:
    • Film high-quality footage that highlights PIBO’s work, the natural beauty of Pelee Island, and the people involved in the organization’s mission.
    • Conduct interviews with staff, volunteers, and community members, ensuring clear and engaging audio-visual quality.
    • Capture a variety of footage including wildlife, fieldwork, community events, and scenic landscapes.
    • Work within the project timeline to ensure all required shots are captured.
  • Post-production:
    • Edit footage to create a compelling short film (approximately 5-10 minutes) that aligns with the messaging and goals of PIBO’s 20th anniversary and mission of the organization.
    • Incorporate music, voiceovers, and graphics where necessary to enhance the narrative and ensure a polished final product.
    • Work with PIBO staff to gather feedback and make revisions as needed.
  • Project Management:
    • Maintain organized files and backups of all footage.
    • Keep to a production timeline and communicate regularly with the project manager regarding progress, challenges, and next steps.

Qualifications

  • Experience with wildlife videography is a plus.
  • Strong storytelling skills, with the ability to translate complex scientific or environmental topics into accessible and engaging visual narratives.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a remote, field-based environment.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to meet deadlines and adapt to evolving project needs.
  • A passion for nature, conservation, or environmental causes is highly preferred.

Preferred Qualifications
