Join EcoEquitable’s Board of Directors!

Needed: Board members
Type: Non-profit board members (unpaid/volunteer)
Organization: EcoEquitable
Location: Ottawa, Ontario

This is an exciting opportunity to join an impactful organization operating at the intersection of textile waste reduction and women’s empowerment in Ottawa for over the last 20 years. EcoEquitable is currently looking for candidates that are passionate about contributing to our mission to join our Volunteer Board of Directors.

About Us

EcoEquitable is a registered charity with a dual purpose of textile waste reduction and women’s empowerment that intersect through the art of sewing. Our vision is equitable and sustainable communities where women thrive! Our flagship charitable program, Sewing for Jobs, welcomes newcomers and self-identifying women into an immersive educational experience where they learn how to sew professionally, develop soft skills, build their network in the community, and reach financial independence through meaningful employment. Our two social enterprise programs include the Eco Fabric Boutique, where we receive and redistribute over 13,000 pounds of donated fabric and sewing supplies each year, and our public sewing and textile classes, that serve to educate others in upcycling, sewing, garment repair, and more.

As the highest leadership body of the organization, the Board as a whole is responsible for:

  • Determining the mission and purposes of the organization
  • Selecting and evaluating the performance of the Executive Director
  • Strategic and organizational planning
  • Ensuring strong fiduciary oversight and financial management
  • Ensure the organization is complying with all legal and regulatory requirements
  • Fundraising and resource development
  • Monitoring EcoEquitable’s impact
  • Enhancing EcoEquitable’s public image
  • Assessing its own performance as the governing body of EcoEquitable

As an individual, each Board Member is responsible for:

  • Knowing the organization’s mission, policies, programs, and needs
  • Serving as a trusted advisor to the Executive Director as they develop and implement EcoEquitable’s strategic plan
  • Commit to attending and/or volunteering in-person at EcoEquitable events as needed each year
  • Serving as active advocates and ambassadors for the organization, and fully engage in identifying and securing financial resources and partnerships necessary for EcoEquitable to advance its mission
  • Preparing for and attending monthly board meetings and the Annual General Meeting
  • Serving on at least one board committee as member or as committee chair
  • Assisting the Executive Director and Board Chair in recruiting other board members
  • Following the organization’s bylaws, policies, and board resolutions
  • Disclosing potential conflicts of interest during meetings and maintaining confidentiality about all internal matters of EcoEquitable
