Architectural Conservancy Ontario’s Board of Directors, London Branch, comprises leaders from the not-for-profit and for-profit sector who are dedicated to the organization's mission of encouraging the conservation and reuse of structures, districts and landscapes of architectural, historic and cultural significance.

Members of Architectural Conservancy Ontario (ACO), through education and advocacy, encourage the conservation and reuse of structures, districts and landscapes of architectural, historic and cultural significance, to inspire and benefit the city and people of London, Ontario and region. Typical branch activities include advocating for threatened heritage properties, providing conservation advice, publishing a local newsletter, organizing Doors Open events, managing revolving funds for heritage restoration projects, managing fundraising events, developing awards programs, and leading tours.

Board Member Role + Responsibilities:

ACO London is currently accepting applications for board member positions, including incoming President, to be elected by ACO membership at their Annual General Meeting. Board terms last for two years and board members can serve for up to three consecutive terms.

We are looking for diverse candidates, with different abilities and/or experience in:

  • heritage conservation
  • architecture and/or built heritage
  • sustainability initiatives including carbon neutrality for business/non-profits
  • local history
  • knowledge/lived experience of specific communities
  • First Nations history
  • land use planning at the municipal or provincial level
  • public policy
  • public speaking
  • non-profit organizations
  • financial literacy
  • fundraising
  • marketing and/or communications
  • relationship building
  • evidence-based decision-making
  • good governance

Board Member - Expectations:

  • Attend Meetings: the full board meets five times a year; committees have additional meetings as required. Board meetings are in-person in London, Ontario. Committee meetings may take place online or in person. Board Members are expected to read board materials in advance of board meetings and to come prepared to ask questions and participate in discussions.
  • Committees: serve on one or more committees of the board and to actively participate in committee work. Committees include Executive Committee, Nominations Committee, Geranium Heritage Tour Committee, Heritage Awards Committee, Policy Committee, Advocacy Committee, Heritage House Signs Committee.
  • Finance and Fundraising: play an active role in securing the financial resources necessary for ACO to achieve its mission, including leveraging relationships and connections to help identify and solicit potential funders. Understand and review financial reports.
  • Attending and/or volunteering at ACO London events such as Geranium Heritage House Tour.
  • Responsibly represent ACO to their respective communities and to advocate for ACO's mission, programs, and services as appropriate.
  • Board Members are expected to be critical and independent thinkers, comfortable with respectfully raising issues of dissent.
