Commitment: Part-time (approx. 5-10 hours per month), 2 year term

About Mind Your Plastic (MYP):

Mind Your Plastic is a national charity dedicated to eliminating plastic pollution by working with municipalities, businesses, and educational institutions. We focus on creating lasting partnerships, advocating for policy changes, and engaging communities to achieve our vision of Plastic-Free Land and Seas.

Role Overview:

The Volunteer Director (Board Member) plays a critical governance and leadership role in the organization. As a member of the Board of Directors, you will help guide the charity’s strategic direction, provide oversight on operational and financial matters, and ensure that Mind Your Plastic fulfills its mission in an ethical and sustainable way. The Volunteer Director also supports the organization by leveraging their networks, expertise, and passion for the environment to build partnerships and promote the cause.

Ideal Candidate:

The current search is focused on individuals with experience in any of the following: government relations, fund development/fundraising, education (school board or teacher) and marketing.

Experience in the non-profit sector and on other boards or in environmental organizations would of course be useful. We are seeking someone who is a good communicator, an original thinker and keen collaborator. Our objective is to have a Board of Canadians with a variety of skills and experience. We want our Board of Directors to reflect the diversity of our community. We welcome and encourage candidates who are women, BIPOC, LGBTQ2S+ and people with disabilities to apply for this position. We aim to have a Board that holds a variety of perspectives and ultimately can make more informed decisions about the populations we serve.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Governance & Oversight:
    • Attend and actively participate in quarterly board meetings and any necessary sub-committees.
    • Review and approve budgets, financial reports, and policies to ensure organizational stability.
    • Ensure that the organization is compliant with federal and provincial nonprofit regulations.
    • Monitor and evaluate the performance of the Executive Director and assist with leadership transitions as needed.
  • Strategic Planning & Direction:
    • Collaborate with other board members and the Executive Director to establish long-term strategies that align with the organization's mission.
    • Contribute to the development and review of programs, campaigns, and new initiatives.
  • Fundraising & Resource Development:
    • Actively support fundraising efforts by identifying potential donors, sponsors, and partners.
    • Attend and promote fundraising events, donor stewardship efforts, and major campaigns.
    • Assist in the development of fundraising strategies and provide input on major donor relationships.
  • Advocacy & Promotion:
    • Act as an ambassador for Mind Your Plastic by raising awareness of its mission and activities within your professional and personal networks.
    • Participate in public relations efforts, representing the organization in speaking engagements, media interviews, and community outreach.
  • Board Development & Support:
    • Mentor new board members and participate in board recruitment efforts.
    • Support the creation of a diverse and inclusive board by promoting the values of equity and inclusion within the organization.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Passion for Environmental Protection:
    • A strong commitment to the reduction of plastic pollution and sustainability.
  • Leadership Experience:
    • Previous experience serving on a board or in a leadership role, ideally in the nonprofit sector.
  • Fundraising Expertise:
    • Experience in fundraising, grant writing, or donor engagement is a strong asset.
  • Financial Acumen:
    • Understanding of nonprofit financials, budgeting, and financial oversight.
  • Communication & Collaboration:
    • Strong interpersonal, communication, and networking skills.
    • Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse range of stakeholders.
  • Governance Knowledge:
    • Familiarity with governance best practices and the roles and responsibilities of nonprofit boards.

Time Commitment:

  • Attend bi-monthly board meetings (virtual).
    • Meetings are 2 hours and typically in January, March, May, July, September and November
  • Participate in sub-committee work, if applicable (average of 2-3 hours per month).
  • Support events, campaigns, and fundraising efforts
