Non-profit Board Positions

Needed: Board Members
Type: nonprofit board of directors / volunteer
Organization: GentleWays for Our Planet
Location: Open to candidates in the Ottawa region

Description

GentleWays for Our Planet is looking for dedicated board members who share our vision of a world where individuals, communities, and institutions work together to reduce their ecological footprint—ensuring a thriving planet for all life forms.

We champion sustainable collaboration, providing practical tools, concrete initiatives, and trustworthy information to inspire and empower individuals to embrace and advocate for sustainable living.

We are currently seeking three new board members to support our organization by offering guidance and expertise on our key initiatives. If you're passionate about making a meaningful environmental impact, we’d love to hear from you!

Current GentleWays projects include:

  • The CHOICE to Repair Initiative
    • In a world where everything is disposable, repairing is an act of resistance—and sustainability. The "Choice to Repair" project aims to create opportunities for residents to fix, not toss, their electronics, clothing, furniture, and more.
  • Annual tree planting event
    • Trees are not just aesthetic—they are essential for public health, climate resilience, and community well-being. Yet, tree coverage in Ottawa is uneven, with lower-income neighborhoods often having fewer trees and suffering from urban heat islands. Our tree equity project directly addresses this imbalance by planting trees where they are needed most
  • Advocating for Plant-Based Policies in Ottawa
    • Cities have the power to lead by example in sustainability. By encouraging plant-based procurement in schools, group homes, shelters, and city-funded institutions, Ottawa can significantly reduce its carbon footprint while promoting healthier, more ethical food choices
  • Expanding PAWS to Include Crustaceans
    • Every living being deserves humane treatment, yet crustaceans—sentient creatures capable of feeling pain—remain unprotected under Ontario’s Provincial Animal Welfare Services (PAWS). Our campaign seeks to change that by advocating for legislative expansion to recognize and protect crustaceans.

Board members are responsible to:

  • Understand the organization’s mission, programmes and needs
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to the Executive Director in the implementation of the GentleWays business plan and projects
  • Prepare for and attend board meetings (approximately 8 per year) and the annual general meeting
  • Commit to attending GentleWays events as needed each year
  • Serving as advocates and ambassadors for the organization and engage in identifying and securing financial resources and partnerships necessary for GentleWays to advance its mission.
  • Support the Executive Director, other Board members, and volunteers in the various GentleWays projects.

Who we are looking for:

  • Board members who share a passion and commitment to climate action and to making the world a gentler place
  • We are looking for Board members who are interested in developing fundraising activities.
  • GentleWays embraces diversity and welcomes new Board members from equity seeking groups..
