Needed: Volunteer Board Members (3)
Organization: Biosphere Eco-Cities Canada (BECC)
Location: Remote, anywhere in Canada
Are you passionate about environmental sustainability and eager to share your expertise and perspectives to drive meaningful change in cities across Canada? Biosphere Eco-Cities Canada (BECC) invites applications from qualified individuals to joining our Board of Directors (currently 5 members).
What we are
BECC is an all-volunteer national educational charity engaging people and organizations in sustainability. It currently provides coordination and support for initiatives in Ottawa, Toronto, Brampton, Edmonton, and Vancouver.

BECC’s vision is a culture of sustainability created in cities (urban and surrounding rural areas) through engagement of people and organizations.
BECC’s mission is to develop Biosphere Eco-City (BEC) initiatives in Canadian cities and abroad, where opportunity exists.
Why get involved?
Help advance environmental sustainability initiatives in Canadian cities
Provide strategic guidance and contribute your expertise to governance and committee work
Build leadership skills and gain experience in nonprofit governance
As a Board Member, you will:
Play a critical role in shaping the strategies and future growth of BECC
Assist in organizational planning and decision making
Attend regular board meetings and participate in strategic discussions
Serve on one of our committees, e.g., fundraising, development, administration, content management, etc.
Who Should Apply?
We welcome applicants from a broad range of backgrounds, perspectives, and
experiences.
We are especially seeking individuals who bring expertise in the following areas:
Operations and Governance
Strategic Planning
Fundraising
Accounting and Finance
Community engagement
Project management
Communication, including social media
Knowledge of environmental issues
Commitment Required: 15-20 hours per month, minimum 1 year commitment.
Preparation for Board and committee meetings (1-2 hours per month)
Participation in monthly virtual Board meetings (1.5 hours per month)
Work on specific board or committee-related tasks in between board meetings to further BECC’s vision and mission (3-4 hours per month)
Participation in three quarterly virtual National Roundtable meetings and one annual general meeting (1.5 hours X4 per year)
Participation in committee meetings (5 hours per month)
Additional time commitment may be required if assuming the role of a Vice Chair Note about Appointments in the Period of March to June 2025
BECC elects a new board at its annual general meeting (AGM) each June
Before that new board members will be selected by the current board
They will not have voting rights until elected but will otherwise participate fully
They may seek election to the board at the AGM
Candidates Who May Not Be Selected at This Time
After three new board positions are filled, other applicants may be considered for
a) BECC teams for communication, fundraising, and project development and content management, or
b) BEC projects to 1. Develop sustainability project databases (four cities), 2. Create a youth environmental speaking contest (Brampton), 3. Promote an urban tree tour (Vancouver), or 4. Initiate youth climate action (Toronto)
