Coastal Research Station

Hiring: Research Station Coordinator
Organization: Salmon Coast Society

Salmon Coast Society is a charitable organization and hub for coastal research, enabling high-quality and innovative science to sustain wild salmon and their ecosystems. We do this through the operation of a field station located in Kwikwasut’inuxw Haxwa’mis territory, in the Broughton Archipelago, near Echo Bay, BC. We are hiring one person to fill the role of Station Coordinator. The successful candidate will serve as the on-site manager leading the day-to-day operations of the station.

Through collaboration with the board of directors, staff, volunteers and contractors, the Station Coordinator will:

  • Ensure a safe and inclusive environment for staff, volunteers and station users;
  • Facilitate logistics for research and education groups, including scheduling and coordination of users and station facilities;
  • Help to facilitate and manage our in-house research programs;
  • Oversee staff and volunteers;
  • Manage organizational communications, including email, social media, website updates, and quarterly/annual public reports;
  • Build relationships with and support community members, partner organizations and local First Nations;
  • Lead outreach and education activities, including presentations, tours, and events;
  • Work as part of a collaborative team to organize training and workshops as needed;
  • Support administrative tasks, including grant writing, fundraising, and donor relations;
  • Assist in care and maintenance of gardens;
  • Support field research programs at the station by serving as a part-time crew member on an as-needed basis.

Required experience and qualifications:

  • Marine boating experience
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills
  • Exceptional organizational skills
  • Interest and awareness of Indigenous rights and sovereignty issues
  • Experience in leadership roles, with the ability to effectively manage staff and volunteers
  • Experience or interest in conservation research
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a small, diverse team in a remote setting
  • Marine Basic First Aid and CPR certifications, or willingness to acquire
  • Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP) Certificate, or willingness to acquire
  • Restricted Operator Certificate Marine Radio License (ROCM), or willingness to acquire

An ideal candidate would have:

  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and as part of a team
  • A positive attitude when working in physically demanding tasks in all weather conditions
  • Experience and/or comfort with remote and/or off-grid living in communal situations
  • Interest in and awareness of local conservation issues
  • Other skills/interests that complement the needs of the station (photography, social media, gardening, carpentry, boat maintenance, education/outreach experience)

Terms: We are seeking one candidate for a full-time, permanent position starting on or around March 1, 2026. The successful applicant is expected to live at the station year-round. During parts of the slow season (~November-February), there may be some flexibility to allow for part-time or virtual work arrangements. In your free time enjoy abundant outdoor recreational opportunities including kayaking, hiking, fishing, boating, wildlife viewing and more. SVOP, Marine Basic First Aid and CPR, and ROCM will be required before the start date.

Compensation: We offer $4,000/month (some flexibility dependent on experience) for an average of 40 hours per week, with communal housing provided. During the field season (approx. April-September), dinner is also provided.
