About Biosphere Eco-Cities Canada (BECC)

Biosphere Eco-Cities Canada (BECC) inspires and supports communities across the country to build sustainable, resilient urban and rural environments through volunteer-driven projects, education, and partnerships. Operating under a two-tier governance model that separates strategic oversight from operational execution, BECC connects local environmental actions to a national vision of communities living in harmony with nature.

Position Overview

We are seeking a structured, fiscally responsible Treasurer to join our voting Board of Directors. As the primary custodian of BECC's financial health, the Treasurer provides comprehensive oversight of all financial operations, ensures regulatory compliance, and steers the organization toward long-term financial sustainability.

This role is ideal for a financial manager, accountant, or bookkeeper who wants to leverage their expertise to advance grassroots environmental impact and robust governance across Canada.

Key Responsibilities

  • Financial Operations & Banking: Oversee day-to-day banking activities, reconcile financial statements from the bank and the board, and maintain secure financial controls.
  • Budgeting & Planning: Develop, monitor, and adjust the comprehensive annual organizational budget in direct reference to the BECC strategic plan.
  • Reporting & Transparency: Prepare accurate financial statements for the Board of Directors, keeping leadership updated on fiscal health and providing board members with transparent access to financial data.
  • Compliance & Regulatory Filings: Maintain strict adherence to Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) financial regulations for registered charities, ensuring all annual tax returns, reports, and corporate filings are submitted accurately and on time.
  • Strategic Governance: Advise the Board on financial risks, resource allocation, and long-term funding sustainability.
  • Team Leadership: Lead a Financial Committee when established, and oversee alignment for national funding applications.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Act as a strategic touchpoint for the Director of Fundraising to track donor income streams, and guide volunteer bookkeepers in balancing transactional records.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Experience: 3+ years of experience in accounting, finance, corporate treasury, or bookkeeping. Proven experience navigating registered charity accounting, CRA regulations, or non-profit fiscal controls is an asset.
  • Fiduciary Responsibility: High integrity with a firm understanding of internal financial controls, balance sheets, and cash flow budgeting.
  • Collaboration Skills: Strong team-oriented mindset with the ability to explain complex financial concepts clearly to non-financial board members.
  • Mission Alignment: A deep interest in sustainability, environmental stewardship, and the volunteer-driven governance structure of BECC.

What We Offer

  • A voting seat on a national board dedicated to driving community-led sustainability.
  • An opportunity to shape the financial framework and governance structure of a scaling non-profit.
  • A deeply collaborative, professional team environment focused on long-term ecological impact.
