Event Description
Relay Education is bringing field trips to schools for the Kids' World of Energy Festival across Canada!
Relay Education’s Kids' World of Energy Festival is a school-based event that showcases different forms of renewable energy to students through hands-on learning. Students explore wind power with wind turbines, solar power with solar panels, electricity with circuits, and biogas with chemical mixtures.
Volunteer role: Lead a short hands-on activity about a renewable energy topic to small groups of students through-out the day with support from Relay Education. Each volunteer will be tasked to running an activity station on a specific topic that includes a hands-on activity, which will be delivered to different groups of students in a classroom-wide environment.
Training materials and video support will be provided in advance of the event day, so you can become familiar and prepared for the content you'll be delivering. Training and support is also offered on the day of. You should feel comfortable talking and facilitating small group activities for kids.
Overview of how day runs:
There will be 4 activity stations set-up in a space within a local elementary school. Each station will have a hands-on activity that is directed by volunteers or Relay Education staff that focuses on renewable energy. Four classes will participate throughout the festival day, with one class participating at a time for approx. 1 hour. As a volunteer you will be responsible for presenting and leading an activity to students about a renewable energy topic.
The Relay Education staff will give a short presentation about the festival to the class at the beginning of each class' participation. After the presentation, the classroom of students will break into 4 smaller groups. Each group will go to an activity station. You will have approximately 12-14 minutes to complete the activity with each group. Once you hear a signal from the Relay Education lead, each group will switch to the next station, and you will receive a new group of students. This will continue until you have engaged all 4 groups of students from one class. This is a full day event that follows a typical school day schedule with a break for lunch.
