Position: Energy and Sustainability Consultant
Organization: Burnaby School District
Location: Burnaby, Metro Vancouver BC (in person)

9-month term with possibility of extension

The Burnaby School District is seeking an Energy and Sustainability Consultant to lead sustainability initiatives within the organization, focusing on energy management, waste reduction, climate action, and community engagement. This role involves overseeing key projects, managing budgets, and ensuring the delivery of various sustainability goals. The successful candidate will work closely with the district Environmental Sustainability and Climate Action Committee, external partners such as the City of Burnaby, and internal teams such as Facilities, school administration, school staff, and students to advance sustainability efforts across the district. The Energy and Sustainability Consultant is the primary contact for BC Hydro and Fortis BC funding and initiatives. This is a term contract for nine (9) months with possibility of extension.

The Energy and Sustainability Consultant responsibilities are:

Sustainability Strategy and Planning:

  • Operationalizes the Sustainability Strategic Plan (SSP).
  • Participates in monthly Environmental Sustainability and Climate Action Committee meetings.
  • Supports submission of the annual Climate Change Accountability Report (CCAR).

Finance and Budget Management:

  • Approves invoices related to energy, water, gas, and waste services.
  • Manages budgets for various sustainability and energy projects, including minor capital projects.
  • Supports Procurement and Facilities team in procurement process.

Energy Management:

  • Manages BC Hydro and Fortis BC energy initiatives, including creating and implementing the annual Strategic Energy Management Plan, commissioning energy audits and studies, submitting incentive and rebate funding applications, facilitating staff engagement opportunities, and quarterly reporting.
  • Oversees school energy monitoring and annual benchmarking.
  • Works with Electrical and Mechanical Manager to determine preventative maintenance and project plans for the district.
  • Oversees management of district EV systems, Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) reporting, and district solar arrays.

Waste Management:

  • Leads the rollout of harmonized district recycling program in collaboration with Custodial team, schools, City of Burnaby, and community stakeholders.
  • Works with Custodial team to address school waste concerns including waste collection, neighborhood dumping, and recycling.

Education & Engagement:

  • Acts as the district sponsor for the Burnaby Youth Sustainability Network (BYSN) and oversees education and engagement opportunities.

Supervision and Team Leadership:

  • Supervises and mentors the Energy Specialist, ensuring alignment with energy and sustainability objectives and fulfilment of their Fortis BC Energy Specialist program requirements.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Possess one of the following credentials:
    • Master’s designation in business, planning, sustainability, or appropriate field
    • Registered Professional Engineer
    • Registered Engineering Technologist
    • BCIT Sustainable Energy Management Associate (BCEM)
    • UBC Masters in Clean Energy
    • Certified Journeyman Electrician
    • Certified Technician (HVAC, instrumentation, or other relevant discipline)
    • CIET Certified Energy Manager (CEM)
  • Possess 5 – 7 years direct experience in a related field with experience with financial analysis, budget management, and supervisory experience.
  • Good knowledge of HVAC, mechanical, electrical, and building management systems.
  • Familiarity and knowledge of energy efficient technologies and associated incentive or grant programs and an ability to develop complex and compelling business cases and comprehensive reports.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, collaboration, interpersonal and presentation skills are essential.
  • Proficiency with computer applications including the Microsoft Office suite.
  • Strong leadership abilities, demonstrated ability to balance priorities, exercise sound judgement, and well-developed political acumen.
  • Demonstrate skills in community environment, including the ability to participate and lead school and student groups and work cooperatively with parents, professionals, and community service agencies.
  • Exemplary ability to collaborate and work as a member of diverse teams/stakeholders, and take initiative, including the district energy management team.
  • Strong knowledge of project management principles and methodologies, capital and energy projects, contract management, budget development, business case development, and
  • Valid BC driver’s license and vehicle.

Hourly pay for this position ranges from $70.00 -$85.00/per hour.
