Position: Program Assistant: Fruit Tree Program & Good Food Box
Type: age 30 & under / summer
Organization: LUSH Valley Food Action Society
Location: Courtenay, BC

Wage: $18 per hour
Schedule: 30 hours per week for 9 weeks (Some weekend work required)

End Date: August 9th, 2024 (Start/end dates are flexible to accommodate schedules as needed; an extension may be considered based on funding availability and operational needs)

This is a Canada Summer Jobs position. Candidates must be between the ages of 15 – 30 and must be Canadian Citizens or Landed Immigrants to apply.

ROLE SUMMARY

LUSH Valley is looking for a Program Assistant to support the Good Food Box, Fruit Tree and Farm Gleaning programs. Primary tasks in this role include managing volunteers, sorting and packing produce, supporting harvest events and driving as required.

The successful candidate must have a Class 5 drivers license (Class 7 will be considered), be comfortable driving a van and have a clean driver’s abstract. Candidates should be skilled at problem-solving, communicating, reporting data and working as part of a team. Passion for local food systems is an asset. The ideal candidate has a diverse skill set that allows them to work in various programs. This role will report directly to the Good Food Box Coordinator and Harvest Coordinator.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Receiving, sorting and packing produce in the LUSH Valley warehouse
  • Picking up produce from farms and farmers’ markets
  • Delivering Good Food Boxes, receiving payments and interacting with clients
  • Coordinating volunteers on farms, orchards and backyards across the Comox Valley
  • Recording statistics and completing administrative tasks
  • Working with the Good Food Box Coordinator and other staff to debrief and plan
  • Assisting with food preparation, fundraising events and outreach as needed

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to adapt to dynamic and changing responsibilities
  • Experience working with diverse groups, volunteers and children
  • Ability to organize, multitask and self-direct
  • Working knowledge of Google Workspace
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Collaborative, can-do attitude
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds (produce, ladders, etc.)
  • Class 5 driver's license with a clear driver's abstract
  • FoodSafe Level 1 Certification
  • Criminal record clearance
  • Basic first aid an asset
  • Farming and/or food systems knowledge an asset
